SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALS PROJECT:

Our study on using microfiber mops in hospitals focused on three motivations for changing how their custodial staff maintained facility floors in patient care areas.

1. Operating more cost efficiently.
2. Improving the health and safety of our petients and employees.
3. Reducing environmental impact by reduction of chemicaluse and disposal.

The Findings:

1. The staff likeed microfiber mopping because it is more efficient, easier to use and less tiring.
2. The patients are happier since it is quieter, faster and less intrusive.
3. Microfiber mopping is a far more effective mopping technique. The tiny fibersare very absorbent so they hold sufficient water for cleaning, yet they don't drip. As a result the floor is merely damp and quickly dries after cleaning. The microfiber is positively charged to attract dust and dirt where they are held tightly and not spread around the rest of the room.
4. Overall, the workers are lifting lighter loads making it easier to use. With microfiber mopping there is a smaller volume of cleaning solution needed so ther is no need to repeatedly return to the sink to dispose of and replenish the cleaning solution.
5. There is far less potential for injury since it uses less water and disinfectant, resulting in less weight to lift and easier maneuvaribility allowing workers to avoid awkward uncomfortable postures that are the source of back, neck and other bodily injuries. Less liquid on the floor means they dry quicker resulting in less opportunity for slips and falls.
6. Microfiber mops were found to substantially reduce the amount of pollution and chemical hazards. With conventional mops, soiled mops are rinsed in the cleaning solution requiring frequent cleaning solution changes to prevent cross contamination between rooms. With microfiber mops only a small volume of cleaning solution is needed at a time, hence ther is no wasted water and disinfectant to be disposed of down the drain. In addition, concentrated cleaners that may contain hazardous chemicals can be significantly reduced minimizing workers expopsure to them creating a safer environment.
7. Large labor savings were realized by considerably reduced preparation time of solutions due to lower volumes used. The need to repeatedly transport, empty and replenish large buckets of cleaning solution was eliminated. Replacing microfiber mop pads takes much less time then rinsing and wringing conventional mops. And finally microfiber mopping was found much easier to manipulate in the room, reducing the total mopping time.
8. Annual material supply costs were reduced by nearly 300% and although the initial purchase for microfiber mops are slightly more, the useful life of a microfiber mop is about 10 times as long.
9. Health hazards due to cross contamination are virtually eliminated with the ease of changing mop heads allowing for a new mop head to be used in every room if required.
10. Laundering costs and the environmental impact it has is greatly reduced with microfiber mops able to be washed in standard wash machines versus conventional mops that must be sent out to commercial laundering at a much higher cost. microfiber mops also require less detergent during washing and less heat during drying as compared to conventional mops lessening the environmental impact.
